Navy
Lacrosse; America's Sport
was completed in July 2002. It is a water color original combining the lacrosse
athlete in the days of the traditional wooden stick against the backdrop
of the American flag.
Scenes picturing the flag have been in vogue since September 11, often referred to as "The Spirit of America". However, I conceptualized this imagery long before September using the posters designed by James Montgomery Flagg as inspiration.
Flagg was an early 20th century illustrator who designed a WWI poster with US Marine in the shadow of the Stars and Stripes. You also may be familiar with the famous "I Want You" poster designed by Flagg, who incidentally used his own likeness as the crusty, old Uncle Sam in the art.
Navy has fielded a lacrosse team since 1908. A rich and fascinating history includes 17 national championships and over 330 All-Americans. Navy lacrosse history also includes yours truly as a wannabe national champion who played a few minutes on the varsity in 1969. Consequently, Navy Lacrosse has a special place in my heart and on my drawing board.
Specifications: The original was sold. You can purchase a more fully devleoped image, Army Navy and Wooden Sticks for $75.
